As we're now edging into fall, we at Real Homes are turning our attention to next year's interior trends. Color curator Joa Studholme from Farrow & Ball has just shared her predictions – and, among a handful of colors, she believes rich mustard yellow will be big news in 2022.
We have seen plenty of sunny yellow room ideas brought to life in 2021, as we've leaned towards the color of happiness for some light relief during a very gray year.
Babouche No.223, Farrow & Ball
'In 2022 we will relish brighter colors that herald a return to normality,' asserts Joa at Farrow & Ball (opens in new tab). 'The cheerful and uncomplicated Babouche [pictured above] is the perfect tone for this task. While bold, it never feels garish or overpowering.'
Joa Studholme believes that décor is moving forward, but also 'drawing inspiration from the modest character of the world of folk and craft,' through tones that evoke a simple and modest life.
The color expert adds that rooms given a lick of Babouche No.223 paint appear to be full of sunshine, especially when combined with understated School House White. We're also big fans of India Yellow, as seen below.
India Yellow, Farrow & Ball
The palette in the bathroom image has a 'simple, folksy feel,' observes Joa. 'But its use across the walls, bath panel and floor creates an overall look that is incredibly striking.'
It seems that the color trends are evolving as the world begins to open up again, but we're also seeking reassurance, holding onto a nostalgic and rustic atmosphere as we decorate our modern-day homes.
Yellows are brilliant for adding warmth and will work just fine in a larger space.
India Yellow, Farrow & Ball
We think either Babouche or India Yellow would work beautifully on the back - or, indeed, front - of a front door. Alternatively, you could embrace yellow as a paint color scheme for hallways.
Paint it on the first wall you see as you come through the door to provide a warm welcome for anyone crossing the threshold into your home. If you're feeling brave, try painting the ceiling of an all-white room yellow to inject some energy and creativity.
One thing's for sure, yellow's rich and enveloping tones aren't going anywhere fast. They pair well with white and gray, ideal for those wanting to dip their toe into beautiful, sunny interiors one paint can at a time.
